What makes a good SEO-friendly URL slug?

A good slug is short, descriptive, lowercase, and uses hyphens between words. It should describe the page's topic, ideally including its main keyword, and avoid dates or IDs that will make it look outdated later.

Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?

Use hyphens. Google recommends hyphens to separate words in URLs because they are treated as word separators, while underscores can cause words to be read as one.

How are accents and special characters handled?

Accented letters are normalized to their plain form (é becomes e), and punctuation, symbols, and spaces are replaced with your chosen separator. Characters outside the Latin alphabet, such as Chinese or Cyrillic, are removed, so transliterate those titles first.

Should I change the slug of an existing page?

Only when there's a strong reason. Changing a published URL resets its history, so always add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one and update your internal links.
