Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I upload my sitemap.xml file?
Upload it to the root of your domain (for example https://example.com/sitemap.xml) so it can list every URL on the site. Then add a Sitemap: line to your robots.txt and submit the sitemap URL in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Do priority and changefreq affect my Google rankings?
No. Google has stated that it ignores the priority and changefreq values. It does use lastmod when the dates are consistently accurate, so only include lastmod when the listed pages have actually changed. Other search engines may still read priority and changefreq.
How many URLs can one sitemap contain?
A single sitemap can hold up to 50,000 URLs and must be no larger than 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites should split their URLs across several sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index file.
Which pages should I include in my sitemap?
Include only canonical, indexable pages that return a 200 status. Leave out redirects, error pages, pages marked noindex, and duplicate URLs such as filtered or parameterized versions of the same page.
