What is Base64 encoding used for?

Base64 represents binary data using only plain ASCII characters, so it can travel safely through systems built for text. Common uses include email attachments, data URIs that embed images in HTML or CSS, binary fields in JSON, and HTTP Basic authentication headers.

Is Base64 a form of encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it instantly, so never rely on it to protect passwords or other secrets.

Does it support Unicode text and emoji?

Yes. Text is converted to UTF-8 before encoding, and decoded output is read back as UTF-8, so accented characters, non-Latin scripts, and emoji are preserved.

Why is Base64 output larger than the original?

Base64 uses 4 characters to represent every 3 bytes of data, so encoded output is about 33% larger than the original.
